My Take On: A Game of Thrones Book/Series
I unfortunately discovered “A Game of Thrones” the series before the book. I can’t really re-call how I found out about it or why I had decided to see it. But nevertheless I did watch it. And I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story itself. This lead me on a book hunt, as I just could NOT wait until the second season was out. Fortunately I found the 5th book hardcover edition and only the first book paperback edition; so without further ado I tried to read the book as fast as I could.
I’m not going to describe or summarize the book/series. Instead I’m going to state how I felt about certain characters, scenes and places.
The castles that I would like to visit the most are the Eyrie. For some reason this place reminds me of the marbal statues found in the louvre. It’s like the Eyrie lives in the time period of those statues. I always have the feeling that it’s a magical and elegant place. Kinda like a place where the elves of Eragon and the Lord of the ring should live. Unlike Winterfell, which seems just cosy and homely, maybe even humble. But not elegant and magical. Winterfell reminds of England in the Tudor’s era. Just like in the series “The Tudors” except more humble.
When I first saw the series I instantly fell in love with a few characters and totally hated the other. Some of these feelings changed by the third book, as you get to actually know them more in depth. But here I will state how I felt towards them after reading the first book/watching the first season. Here is what I think about some of my favorite/most hated characters.
Eddard Stark
Since the first episode of the series I just fell in love with Ned. I knew that I am for house Stark after the scene where Ned beheads the poor deserter from the night’s watch. I was so angry thou when he beheaded him, because the poor lad was frightened to death and was only trying to warn anyone about the others. But this part isn’t important. As much as I love Ned, as much as I wish I could kill him again for letting himself get killed. He’s too honorable and respectful! I am so angry at him for trust little finger so blindly! How could he just give away his men to go protect other people! I was just crazy mad when Jamie Lannister shattered his knee, and then all his men die. I was even mad at him for not listening to Renly! But I guess this is why I love him so much, that till the end he was loyal and honorable.
The only part where the series is better than the book, is Ned’s death scene. While I was watching I was SOOOO confident that he wouldn’t die. I mean HOW COULD THEY KILL HIM! And the way Ayra was perched up on the statue looking at her father just broke my heart! I was hoping that Ayra would somehow use needle to set her father free, I thought someone would save him. But then he dies… I was so shocked and heart broken! I hated this scene so much and loved it at the same time. The problem with the book is that Ned’s death scene wasn’t as epic as the series. I think it was shown partly from Ayra’s POV then continues from Sansa’s POV. The book made me feel that Ned wasn’t much of an important character in the book. I think he deserved a better death scene (chapter) than that. And this part really frustrated me. But this is the problem with watching a series/movie before reading the book.
BUT ALAS! The Lord of Winterfell, is why I am 100% for house Stark and Winterfell. And he will always be my number one character.
Arya Stark
If I could be ANYONE in the “A Song of Fire and Ice” series, it would be Arya Stark. The thing that drew me the most to her is how she is the complete opposite of what a little girl is supposed to be. Her whole attitude is just so adorable and lovable. I think it’s impossible for anyone to hate Arya Stark.
Daenerys Targaryen
I think that the strongest character in this book is Danny. When I first saw her in the series my heart broke, she looked so young and innocent. She seemed so weak and fragile. The part that made my sympathize for her the most, is when she learns that she is to be sold to khal Drogo. The look she got on her face was so helpless. I couldn’t help but hate and loathe her brother. In the series and the book her brother Viserys would always scare her with “You don’t want to wake the dragon” and would psychologically and physically harm her.
I said she is the strongest character in the book is because, even thou she was soo little and so weak. She made the best out of her situation and this ultimately frees her from her helplessness.
She was able to make khal Drogo love her, and love him in return. This part is more apparent in the book than the series. She realizes that as a khaleesishe doesn’t have to put up with her brother and this leads to his death with the “golden crown”.
The part that truly shows her mental strength and determination. Is when after Drogo dies, and burns the maegi. With nothing but faith in that she is the blood of the dragon and that fire doesn’t harm the dragon. She walks into the fire. After the fires burn down. She emerges with three baby dragons and is proclaimed the mother of dragons.
The way she is transformed from a scared and helpless teenager to the mother of dragons, is enough proof that she is ultimately awesome!
Jon Snow
I can’t help but feel sorry for Jon. Not only is he always treated bad by his step mother, but everyone just lets him ship himself off to the wall! How cruel is that!? When ones own father thinks it’s best for his son to be a brother of the nights watch!
Putting that note aside, I really admired the way Jon learned how the other brothers of the night’s watch are his new brothers. At first there was a certain tension between them, and he didn’t really understand why. But the way he became part of them when he did know, just shows the goodness thats really inside.
Jon also defends Samwell Tarly “Sir Piggy”. The way that he protects him and forces the other brother to protect him also, just shows how much a good person he is. Bastard or not. Jon is as true a Stark as any of his half brothers and sisters.
Sansa Stark
All I can say is that I HATE Sansa! She is exactly what is bad about females. I was so shocked that she lied about The whole Joffrey/Butcher Boy/Arya incident. Like what was she thinking!? Family should always come first, even if it’s for a stupid prince. It was just plain infuriating! She deserved a big ass slap for that. What ticked me off more was how she proceeded to blame Arya for Lady’s death. Like seriously you dumb airhead, Joffrey is the reason Lady’s dead not your sister! And moreover, she tells queen Cersei that her father is going to leave King’s Landing which ultimately results in his death, WHY would she do that you may ask. Of course for Joffrey -.-
All in all, Sansa should have died instead of Ned.
Catelyn Stark
I think Sansa inherited her idiocy from her mother. She actually decided to kidnap the Imp. Which was stupid! I mean don’t you ever learn!? You need a lot of nights, at least a small army ready where ever your family is, so that when you kidnap a freaking Lannister their siblings don’t go shattering your husband’s knee and killing him! And ultimately wrecking war on the whole realm! She might not be as bad as Sansa, but she is one of the characters that I just simply detest.
Tyrion Lannister
Even though Tyrion is a Lannister, I couldn’t help but love his personality. The way he thinks everything carefully through and his smart comebacks are enough to make up for his house.
I don’t really have anything more to say about Tyrion without having to explain a pretty hefty part of the book. But all I’d have to say that he is character that I respect the most in this book.
Final Verdict
House Stark is my house of choosing :D *FOR WINTERFELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
I was glad to find that the series was mostly the same as the book except for just a few changes. The only thing that I hated about this book was Eddard’s death scene. So I would give the book a 9/10. And the series a 10/10.
Overall it is a MUST SEE & MUST READ!
